On Monday evening 24th Janiuary 2011 at The Mayor’s Parlour in The Civic Offices, Sutton’s Mayor Councillor Margaret Court hosted a reception and presentation evening for Theo’s Magic Sunflower Competition. Last year Sutton residents and surrounding areas took part in trying to magically grow the tallest and widest sunflower. All the magic seeds were provided by organiser Sutton’s Magic Circle Magician and Chairman of The Sutton Complementary Health Network (with his Mobile Massage Therapist Hat On) Theo Theodoris. The Magic Event raised a total of £2160 for the two local charities.
As well as thanking the three main sponsors: Buchlers of Epsom, Arnold & Self Removals Hackbridge & Surry Inks of Wallington, Theo thanked every single prize giver for the auction, raffle and sunflower prizes.
Theo explained to all the sponsors, it all started out as a little fun event in growing a few sunflowers where the whole family could take part in. Two charities were chosen for special reasons. The first, The Neonatal Unit at St Helier Hospital, Carshalton where Theo’s daughter Elena was born 10 weeks early weighing 2lbs. Theo is ever indebted to the amazing staff at the Unit when they took care of little Elena. The other charity being,
The Royal Marsden, Carshalton, where good friends of Theo, were cared for so well and sadly no longer with us.
Theo is an avid Business Networking and attends a lot of Business Network Groups in and around Sutton promoting both his Magic and Massage Services. When local companies heard about Theo’s Sunflower Competition they were keen to help out. Theo was overwhelmed by the support and all of a sudden the Competition blossomed before it even started. As Theo had so many prizes and gifts, he wanted to make full use of them. So on 22nd March 2010 Theo held a Launch Night at Aberdour School in Burgh Heath Tadworth with great help from the then, PTA Chairman Gill Spicer.
Over 100 people attend the Launch Night where the 1st Magic Seed was sown. This was followed by a Magic Show for the Children. The young one’s then disappeared, as it was a school night and the night was followed by an auction, raffle and Adult Magic Show. Over £1,000 was raised on the Night. A further £1000 plus was raised from the selling of packs of ten of Theo’s Magic Seeds for £5.
There were four Categories: Tallest Sunflower, Widest Head of a Sunflower, Funniest Picture with your Sunflower & School or Nursery with Tallest Sunflower. All pictures of Winning Sunflowers can be seen by going to www.magictheo.com clicking Charity Tab, then Competition Winners 2010. All the generous sponsors can be seen my clicking the Sunflower logo.
With the assistance of Sutton Mayor Councillor Margaret Court, Theo The Magician presented Catherine Swanson-Matron Neonatal Services the big £1080 cheque. Catherine Swanson said,” A thank you to all you sponsors and a big thank you to Theo who continues to take an active role in fund raising for our charity and has done so since the birth of his premature daughter in 2001. Through his hard work we have made several purchases of medical equipment including an intensive care incubator. We thank him for his dedication and continued support of now raising over £25,000 in total. The money raised from the Sunflower Competition will go to buy a “SimBaby” which is a baby simulation doll which can provide intensive and practical education for both staff and parents. It costs around £17,000 and now only about £5,000 short of purchasing.
The second picture, also taken by Louise Sutherland Photography, shows the Mayor, Amanda Heaton-Royal Marsden Fundraising Manager also receiving a big cheque of £1080. Amanda gave her thanks to all the sponsors and Theo for his great efforts of getting families and sponsors involved and explained that the money was going to their major project of the New Teenage Unit in Carshalton.
After the cheque presentation The Mayor thanked Theo for his continuous community work in Sutton and thanked all the twenty plus sponsors and supports for helping make the Event such a success. The evening carried on with Theo thanking the Mayor for kindly agreeing to host a lovely evening. Theo went on throughout the evening with the Mayor presenting every single sponsor and supporter with a thank you certificate.
